There has been many a time where I am staring at the screen, imagining what I want to create, then getting frustrated that it isn't happening as I am thinking about it.
There are a few architects I work with who would like things to be created at the speed of thought too.

Agree. I guess what I was trying to say is those in our industry are button pushers and settings masters will not make it. But I agree that like the democratization of photography, the industry will become much much bigger.

maybe in the short to mid term, but in the long term i think it will make our industry stronger. The same was said with the introduction of digital photography. It is also one of the exciting things about our industry in that it is constantly evolving.

Hell, even if you look 10-15 years, AI will be able to create renderings with voice commands. The demos I've seen not only can replicate style (style transfer) but can also create new image content from learned datasets. Although I'm sure by then Unsupervised Learning will have pushed it even further.

Yup and I think there is a good chuck of our industry that is going to get put out of business in the process if people don't take note. The democratization of rendering will work much like the iPhone did for photography. Allow those with an eye, who previously did not have the desire to learn the technicalities of rendering, a tool to express their visions. And all of those who make a living as masters of render settings and are pumping out renderings like widgets fro a factory, with little to no creative abilities, will get pushed to the side.
Imagine now how many people who are involved in design who could do do their own renderings. Who will when the tools are there to do virtual photography. The "render button" is very very close. As are materials and lights. The models are generally already being created, so you couple that with real-time engines, tools like Epic's Datasmith and Allegorithmic materials and now all you need is proper lighting and composition. Of course this does not change the top studios in the industry or the bottom feeders, but those in the middle should think hard about their business models as this transition is coming a lot sooner than I think many realize.

I think its also starting to happen on the technology side of things, making the tech invisible, enabling the artist to create without having settings getting in the way.
good times ahead

I whole heartily agree, for a while now I have become "disillusioned" with our industry for this very reason.
I am excited to see the new direction.

I think that was a post on my personal facebook post last year at the first THU I went to. This was the post:
"Interesting... I've been seeing so many amazing talks and masterclasses here at #THU2016 where the content was based around creativity, storytelling, color, lighting and art that it was a bit of a shock to now sit in a session taking about 3D and technical stuff. Basically like EVERY single other event I go to. It actually made me angry. It has occurred to me how bored to death I am of the technical side of our industry and how much time and energy is spent on this. It has inspired me to move CGA in a new direction. So many ideas in my head. Between this event and Nikos Nikolopoulos' CreativeLighting project I've been inspired, I feel it's time for a new direction. Feeling excited about the new possibilities."
Still a long way to go....

I recently listened to the CG Garage podcast with Chris, made during THU, there was a mention to a facebook post you made about the lack of inspiration in the arch viz field (or something to that extent). Where can I find that post?

Agree, I think this is one of the best articles written about our industry in a while.
